1. AMK Ultralight/Watertight .5: lightest pick
Price: $31.95 at REI ($31.99 on the brand site) · Weight: 3.6 oz · Rated for: 1 person, up to 2 days (brand)
Two layers of waterproofing, a DryFlex inner bag inside a DWR outer bag, keep this kit dry. Inside are fabric and knuckle bandages, butterfly closures, die-cut moleskin, 2×2 and 3×3 gauze, a non-adherent pad, tick/splinter forceps, triple-antibiotic ointment, tincture of benzoin, and 2 doses each of aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen and diphenhydramine.
- Pros: the lightest kit here, fully waterproof, and cheap.
- Cons: no shears, trauma pad, irrigation syringe or anti-diarrheal, and only a few doses of each med.
- Suits: solo ultralight hikers on overnights and short trips.
Note on the new version: REI says it no longer carries the older .5 and points to the newest one. Amazon's current .5 listing is a newer one, first available in January 2025. Retailers list a different rating than the brand: REI says it's for "a pair" and Amazon says "2 Person."

2. AMK Ultralight/Watertight .7: best waterproof kit for two
Price: $44.95 at REI ($44.99 on the brand site) · Weight: 5.8 oz · Rated for: 1–2 people, up to 4 days (brand)
It uses the same two-layer waterproof bags as the .5. It adds 10 yd of cloth tape, duct tape, an elastic bandage, two 3×4 non-adherent dressings, gloves, Skin-Tac wipes and 3 butterfly closures.
- Pros: waterproof at under 6 oz. BikeHikeSafari names it its "best ultralight" kit.
- Cons: the priciest per ounce, with no shears, trauma pad or irrigation syringe.
- Suits: ultralight pairs, wet trips, and packrafting.
Note on the new version: as with the .5, REI says it no longer carries the older .7, and Amazon's listing is a newer one first available in January 2025. REI and Amazon now rate it for up to 3 people for up to 3 days, which differs from the brand's rating. The Amazon listing also says the kit can't be returned because of hazmat shipping rules, with refunds only for damaged items.

3. AMK Mountain Series Hiker: best budget all-rounder
Price: $34.50 at REI ($34.49 on the brand site) · Weight: 7.2 oz (REI; the brand says "under 8 oz") · Rated for: 1–2 people, 1–2 days
For only a few dollars more than the .5, you get a trauma pad, 4" EMT shears, forceps, an elastic bandage, moleskin, 2 doses each of 4 over-the-counter meds, and a wilderness first-aid manual. Contents are sorted into pockets labeled by injury.
- Pros: shears and a trauma pad at a budget price.
- Cons: the bag is only water-resistant. Some REI reviewers report zipper failures and meds that were close to expiring.
- Suits: weekend backpackers on a budget.
4. HART Outdoor Weekend: best organized budget kit
Price: $30.95 at REI · Weight: 9.5 oz · Rated for: 2 people, 2–3 days
This kit opens like a clamshell into clear, labeled pockets. Contents include a 5×9 ABD pad, a 2"×5 yd elastic bandage, scissors, forceps, antacids, aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, an allergy med, and hydrocortisone and burn creams. It comes with a list of expiration dates and a Forgey wilderness guide.
- Pros: well organized, easy to restock, and the cheapest of these picks at REI.
- Cons: heavier than the AMK Hiker, the case isn't waterproof, and it has only 2.5 yd of tape. One REI reviewer said their kit had no tweezers, though the current contents list includes forceps.
- Suits: families and new backpackers.
5. AMK Mountain Series Backpacker: most complete for multi-day trips
Price: $57.50 at REI ($57.49 on the brand site) · Weight: 15.2 oz · Rated for: 1–2 people, up to 4 days
This kit adds real wound-cleaning gear: a 10 cc irrigation syringe with an 18-gauge tip. It also has a trauma pad, EMT shears, moleskin, tincture of benzoin, loperamide, multiple doses of pain relievers and antihistamine, and a Weiss wilderness medicine guide. (Exact quantities differ between REI's and AMK's contents lists.)
- Pros: the most complete kit at a backpacking weight. BikeHikeSafari calls it the "best for backpacking."
- Cons: only water-resistant, so it needs a liner bag. An REI reviewer who identifies as an ER physician pointed out that it has no tourniquet.
- Suits: multi-day trips for 1–2 people, and thru-hikers.
6. AMK Mountain Series Explorer: best for groups
Price: $86.50 at REI ($86.49 on the brand site) · Weight: 1 lb 6.4 oz · Rated for: up to 4 people, up to 7 days
The Explorer adds a CPR face shield, a triangular bandage, a 3" elastic wrap, a 20 cc irrigation syringe, wound-closure strips, single-use thermometers, a patient assessment form, and the full Weiss guide.
- Pros: enough depth for a group.
- Cons: about 1.4 lb, and the most expensive pick here. An REI reviewer who identifies as a nurse suggests swapping the face shield for a one-way valve mask and adding a tourniquet.
- Suits: small groups, families, and trip leaders.
Check the med expiration dates
Check dates as soon as your kit arrives. Some REI reviewers report that Hiker and Explorer kits arrived with meds and ointments that expired within a year, and that the outside of the package showed no date. HART includes a list of expiration dates. Whichever kit you buy, check dates on arrival and restock before every trip.
A note on reviews: many REI reviews of the .5, .7 and Mountain Series kits are labeled "collected as part of a promotion," so weigh them accordingly.
What a good backpacking kit should contain
Use this list, drawn from REI, NOLS and the American Red Cross, to check any kit, pre-made or not.
- Wound care: gloves, antiseptic (BZK) wipes, antibiotic ointment, an irrigation syringe, wound-closure strips, tincture of benzoin, non-stick pads, 4×4 gauze, conforming roll gauze, and 1" cloth tape (REI, NOLS).
- Blisters: moleskin plus second-skin or transparent film dressings (NOLS).
- Sprains and fractures: an elastic wrap, a SAM splint, and a triangular bandage (REI, NOLS).
- Meds: ibuprofen, an antihistamine, an anti-diarrheal, oral rehydration salts, glucose, personal prescriptions, and epinephrine if anyone needs it (REI).
- Tools: trauma shears, fine tweezers, safety pins, a thermometer, a CPR mask, and a waterproof container (REI, NOLS). The Red Cross list adds an emergency blanket, a one-way-valve breathing barrier, and 5×9 compress dressings.
Principles to pack by: only carry what you know how to use, size the kit to the trip and the group, label your meds, and check expiration dates and restock before every trip. NOLS also notes that buying a pre-made kit and adding to it is usually cheaper than building one from scratch.
Smart DIY add-ons
- For the Ultralight/Watertight kits: a SAM splint, a mylar emergency blanket, and trauma shears.
- For any kit: extra ibuprofen and loperamide, oral rehydration salts, a glucose gel, and a second pair of nitrile gloves. For blisters, add leukotape or Coban and transparent film dressings.
- For the Mountain Series and HART kits: a zip-lock or dry-bag liner.
- For remote trips or groups: a tourniquet and hemostatic gauze. REI's list recommends them, and so do reviewers on REI and BikeHikeSafari.
- Always: personal prescriptions, and an epinephrine auto-injector if anyone in your group needs one.
